Wk3 Reading-Art of Possibility – Chapters 5-8

In this week’s reading there were several “rules” discussed. They reminded me of different leadership styles used in business.  We saw examples of Transactional Leadership, Autocratic Leadership, Bureaucratic Leadership, Charismatic Leadership, Democratic/Participative Leadership, Servant Leadership and Transformational Leadership.

“Leading from any chair” reminds me of the servant and transformational leadership.  Leading by example, Zander’s example of when he chastised the orchestra, specifically the cow bells for not coming in on time (p 70) and then realized he made a mistake and owned up to it.  Showing a different style by admitting and being accountable for his actions.  Several orchestral members made note of it and were appreciative.  “Transformational leaders are inspiring because they expect the best from everyone on their team as well as themselves. This leads to high productivity and engagement from everyone in their team.” ~ http://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newLDR_84.htm

  1. Excellent overview and bringing additional information to your summary. I’ve always been a fan of Servant Leadership, possibly because it’s the opposite of the kind of leadership I’ve seen too often: autocratic leadership. Don’t get me started on leaders who assume their power is based on some superior skill or endowment that they claim to have. Ack.
