Are you going to live forever? Are there things you would like to accomplsih before you leave your time on Earth? Where is your bucket list?
The concept of a “bucket list” was made popular by the Rob Reiner comedy-drama film entitled “The Bucket List” in 2008. The film starred Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. It was the story about a blue-collar mechanic and billionaire hospital magnate who are both diagnosed with terminal cancer. Despite their different backgrounds and lifestyles, the two become friends. Nicholson’s character spies Freeman’s character writing a list and decides he wants in. Together they start writing a “bucket list,” or things to do before they “kick the bucket”.
The men commit to financing their bucket lists and accomplishing everything on it while adding new items along the way. These events include an African safari, skydiving, reaching the peak of the North Pole, kissing a beautiful girl and other interesting, potentially once-in-a-lifetime experiences. These lists spark a journey of fulfillment, self awareness, perseverance, personal goals and accomplishment, sometimes in the most surprising of places.
Do You Have a Bucket List?: Is it a personal or professional bucket list, or both? Why do you have it? Have you checked much off of your bucket list? Have a long way to go? Or, have you just started? What will you do when you accomplish all items on your list?
You Don’t Have a Bucket List?: Well why not? What’s your excuse – no time, little money, things, situations or people standing in your way? We need to really examine how we spend our days. Is there anything that you can honestly and proudly say you have accomplished in the last three to six months? Did you you anything you planned to do, whether it be personally or professionally? Would they make any difference if you were to die tomorrow?
Bucket lists certainly have a way of putting things into perspective and prioritizing what’s important to you and your life. Bucket lists begin the true analysis of “Am I really maximizing every moment towards what matters most to me?” It can lead to clarity, focus and independence in your personal and professional lives.
Creating Your Own Bucket List: As I was reviewing the Science of People’s The Ultimate Guide to Creating Your Bucket List, unexpected things happen as they saw a misprint in an online airfare ad, Etihad Air (the official airline of United Arab Emirates) had posted an error in their fare pricing. Instead of a $2,140 round-trip ticket price, someone had forgotten the “4” and posted a $210 round-trip airfare! Bucket List dream trip gotten.
Here are some helpful hints to start your own bucket list:
Remove all obstacles: Truly let your imagination fly and see what it is you really want to do if there were no obstacles.
Create a dream board: Words and pictures together create momentum
Get some inspiration: Share you ideas with friends and family. Perhaps post on social media the top five thing you want to do before you die and see what others say.
Set deadlines: Nothing ever happens on it’s own. Set it by achievement goals or by year. It can be your child’s high school/college graduation, by age 25, 30, 40, or year 2017, 2018 or 2019. If no deadlines are set, your list will end up covered in dust.
Share it and bare it: Share and compare your bucket list with the important people in your life. You should share your bucket list(s) with your spouse, partner, parent, best friend, roommate, siblings, teachers–anyone who might be able to help or join you on your quests.
What’s Your Top Three: Creating your bucket list is almost as fun as completing it. Pick your top three and make it priority to get them done.
Get a buddy: Take a hint from the movie and ask someone to join you on your bucket list journey. What better way to experience your bucket list than to share it with someone.
Celebrate: Honor your achievements. Don’t let them fade. Start a blog of your journey, devote a Pinterest or Instagram account, create a collage to hang in your home. The ideas are endless.
You Can’t Just Have One: There are things I know I want to achieve in my business, personal, family and general life. These can all be separate lists, although you could see some overlapping.
Just Have Fun: Life can be too full of regrets. Grab it by the horns and ride it for all it’s worth.
